Employee to be sentenced for taking boss's commercial vehicle

An 18-year-old man from South Devon who recently made himself a very unattractive proposition van insurance companies by drinking one and a half litres of whisky and two litres of wine before driving his boss's Vauxhall Vitaro is expected to receive a prison sentence on May 13 for a number of driving-related offences.

On Thursday the block paving apprentice pleaded guilty to drink driving, driving without van insurance and obstructing a police officer after taking a commercial vehicle without the owner' s consent.

Police were alerted to his crimes after finding the 18-year-old by the roadside trying to repair damage he had caused to the van. A breath sample revealed that he had 61 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, nearly twice the legal limit.

The defendant's boss has so far not made any comment to media regarding the case or as to whether the offences would increase the cost of his van insurance policy.
