Motorists consider fraud

Although many may not realise that by doing so they would be reducing their chances of getting a cheap van insurance quote, an alarming number of motorists admit they have considered making a fraudulent motor insurance claim.

Of the one million surveyed who say they would consider doing so, a staggering 350,000 confess that they have already done so, in the process raising the baseline for cheap van insurance for millions of other drivers.

Steve Sweeney, head of insurance with moneysupermarket, comments, "Desperate times do often call for desperate measures, but surely this is a step too far for British motorists,"

"We have all been affected by the recession in one way or another, but crashing for cash is not only illegal but willfully endangers the lives of others.

"Organised motor fraud not only costs the insurance industry millions, but risks the safety of innocent drivers, passengers and pedestrians."

According to figures from the ABI (Association of British Insurers), motor insurance fraud costs around £1.6 billion each year, in the process adding £40 to the cost of the typical premium.

However, the survey did not pertain specifically to the drivers of commercial vehicles, so it is difficult to ascertain just how many cheap van insurance customers would consider "crashing for cash".
