An alert from Auto Trader magazine threatens to make cheap van insurance quotes harder to find, if research from the British Car Auction is to be believed.

Taken together, the two sources suggest that professional drivers are finding the value of their vehicles falling alongside their income, meaning that many fear getting their vans serviced for fear of the costs of repair.

An Auto Trader spokesman said, "We believe that motorists on the whole are very responsible, but with tightening budgets and possible job losses looming, motorists are being very careful with their money and feel that they have no option but to sacrifice essential vehicle maintenance."

If the number of unroadworthy vehicles is to rise, the number of accidents may do so in turn, forcing up the van insurance premiums of both the drivers involved in the accidents and those who are simply affected by a greater number of accidents occurring on UK roads.

A spokesman for iVan, specialists in providing cheap van insurance quotes online, said "We appreciate the struggle that professional van drivers may face in these difficult times, but we do worry that avoiding much-needed repairs might turn out to be a false economy for your insurance premium."
