Stolen Volkswagen vehicle discovered after 35 years

A US van insurance company had a pleasant surprise this week when it was announced that customs officials had opened a Netherlands-bound shipping container to find an immaculately preserved 1965 Volkswagen Combi.

The vehicle, which had been stolen from an upholstery shop in 1974, is no longer the property of the original owner but will instead be returned to the van insurance company that paid out the owner's theft claim back in 1974.

An Investigator with California Highway Patrol commented, "Now it's probably worth 27 grand. It's a beautiful van."

A spokesperson from the lucky van insurance company said that once the relevant documentation had been found, the vehicle would probably be sold at auction. However, she said that "trying to find paper files from that far back can be pretty challenging."
