Van insurers urge drivers to declare vehicle modifications

Van drivers are being advised to notify their van insurance company of any modifications or alterations they make to their vehicles to ensure their policy remains valid.

Any modifications made to vehicles may affect the van insurance premium and must be declared to the insurance company.

One van insurer has seen a 10% rise in the last six months on quotes for modified commercial vehicles with performance enhancements, larger engines and alloy wheels the most popular modifications.

According to the company even small alterations such as changes to the van's suspension, engine or body which are different form the original manufacturer's specification must be declared.

While some alterations to a van can increase the premium, some additions such as fitting a tracking device can actually help reduce insurance quotes and van insurance premiums.
