The UK van-driving public have been warned to check that their van insurance cover allows them to drive other vehicles before getting behind the wheel of a friend's or family member's motor.
According to one of the UK's largest providers of van insurance cover, most van cover, unlike car cover, does not provide automatic third party protection for drivers looking to drive another vehicle and, as such, advised policyholders to find out if their commercial vehicle cover contained the provision.
The commercial vehicle manager with the van insurance cover company commented, "Van and commercial vehicle drivers often wrongly assume they are covered to drive another vehicle. A typical example could be a van driver who uses his vehicle for business and assumes their insurance policy covers them to drive a family member's car, which generally isn't the case."
