Sandwich van insurance holders, just like all other van owners who are running a business, need to keep their van in good working condition.
However, new research has shown that just 54% of motorists quote low tread depth as the reason for changing tyres, with 62% saying they would only replace the tyres if a crack or bulge were to appear.
Motorists with business van insurance need to be made more aware of how important it is to maintain their tyres as they are largely responsible for keeping the road user safe and the vehicle attached to the highway.
A spokesman for a tyre company said he was surprised and worried at the amount of people who were driving with illegal tyres. The minimum tread depth allowed is 1.6mm. He urges all motorists to ensure that they take the time required in order to make sure they have the correct tread depth and make sure the general condition of tyres is acceptable.
Having low tread depth could be responsible for slower braking times, especially on a heavily laden van, which could result in a severe or even fatal accident. Plus, failure to comply with the tread depth rule could mean the driver receives a £2,500 fine as well as three points on their licence.
Sandwich van insurance holders operating in the UK should make note of the legal minimum tyre tread depth, and be mindful that motoring safety experts actually recommend changing them once they get below 2.5mm.
