It's been a couple of weeks now since removal van drivers with uninsured vehicles have had to either apply for a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN) or take out removal van insurance.
The new insurance rules, which came into effect on Monday 20 June, have a particular irony for those in the removals trade: take out removal van insurance or have your van removed.
As one driver put it, "I've got two vans. One is my bread and butter, so to speak, and the other is there, partly as back up and partly for sentimental reasons.
"I've now had to get it [the back up van] MOT'd and insured because of the new rules, but at least it means it'll be clocking up some miles. It also means I might look to take on a couple of extra lads part-time to cope with the occasional bit of extra work I might usually turn down."
Under the new rules, those who fail to insure their commercial vehicle or declare it off road will face a £100 fine or having it clamped, seized or, in some cases, destroyed.
A spokesperson with the Motor Insurers Bureau said that all businesses would have to be quick about either getting a SORN or the relevant removal van insurance policy. "We know who the registered keepers are with vehicles that have no insurance and letters will be dropping on to their doormats. It's no longer a case of if you will get caught, but when you will get caught," he said.
