Transit van insurance holders' vehicles targeted

Drivers with Transit van insurance should be careful where they park their vehicle and may also want to improve van security after insurance claim statistics have revealed they are more prone to the attention of vehicle thieves than other makes.

Although figures collected by police and insurance companies have shown that vehicle crime has decreased in Britain over the last 20 years, the vehicle which remains most popular with thieves is the Ford Transit.

"Although high-end cars are stolen to order by criminals, those driving more affordable vehicles should not be complacent. Whatever vehicle you drive, security should always be a priority," the head of ACPO Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (AVCIS) stated.

According to AVCIS, the Transit van is heavily targeted because of its scrap value, and because there may be tools in the rear of the vehicle which can be sold or used for further break-ins.

Drivers with certain levels of business van insurance may be able to claim for lost tools and loss of business revenue, but a successful vehicle theft or break-in is likely to leave van owners with inadequate cover out of pocket.

If Ford Transit van insurance holders are concerned that their van may become the target of vehicle crime, they could invest in a van alarm, an immobiliser, toughened glass for their windows, or a tracking device.
