Death claim lodged

A UK van insurance company is facing a six-figure compensation claim from the mother of two young women who were killed when a van collided with their car.

Papers for the UK van insurance claim were lodged at the Court of Session in Edinburgh this week and it is understood that, if successful, the bereaved mother will secure a settlement of around £250,000 from the relevant commercial vehicle insurer.

The driver of the van has already been convicted of driving carelessly at a hearing at Banff Sheriff Court; he received a £640 fine and a six-month driving ban.

"This was an accident with horrendous consequences. Three young lives with such great potential have been tragically cut short," said the solicitor representing the claim.

Should the court agree that the defendant was guilty of "failure to drive with reasonable care" and causing the accident, then it will fall to his UK van insurance company to payout the claim.
