Power tools stolen from vans in Surrey

A van insurance company has warned van drivers in Surrey to take extra care of their power tools following a recent spate of break-ins that have seen commercial vehicles targeted by thieves.

The van insurance company says that over a two-week period in March it received claims for three separate thefts, all of which took place in the Surrey village of Spelthorne.

"The thieves hit jackpot as one van had a cordless drill, hand tools, along with an electrical calibration unit stored inside. The police have issued special warnings to van owners pertaining to the security of their valuables stored inside vans," said a spokesperson.

Police say that although the incidents are not linked, van drivers should be vigilant about ensuring tools are not left in vans, particularly overnight. Additionally, they said that drivers should always lock windows and doors and not leave valuables in view.

It is understood among those vans targeted were a Citroen and a Mercedes although it is not known whether the drivers of these vehicles will be making van insurance claims for the thefts.
