Comprehensive cover urged in busy news month for van drivers

A reminder of the importance of having good van insurance cover has been issued by industry professionals this week after it emerged that commercial vehicles such as vans are among those most likely to break down.

The reminder comes at a particularly pertinent time, with many credit crunch-hit van drivers opting to buy second-hand vehicles instead of newer, more expensive models. Just last week British Car Auctions (BCA) announced that the average price of a second hand van had dropped to around £3,000.

Strangely though, it was also revealed that the colour of a van had a bearing on its likelihood of needing break down assistance - and its bad news for van insurance customers with grey vans. Mat Watson of imotormag.co.uk comments, "One theory is that many hire and company car fleets choose grey vehicles as the colour looks newer for longer, with dents and scratches less noticeable. These vehicles are often exposed to very high mileage, so perhaps their chance of needing assistance is greater."

The news comes less than one month after Direct Line emphasised the benefits of choosing the most comprehensive van insurance cover over some of the cheaper policies available.
