Astra Van contract promises 400 jobs at Vauxhall

News of a production boost at Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port factory could mean many more Astra Van insurance customers on tomorrow's roads.

The firm's Managing Director said that work on new models - including the next generation Astra Van - could create as many as 400 jobs at the facility and ensure a strong future for Vauxhall in the UK.

All that is needed before production commences is the blessing of Vauxhall's parent company, GM Europe.

Speaking at the Paris Motor Show the MD confirmed that a final decision would be made in the New Year, adding that he had made a "very strong business case" for the planned expansion.

He also called on the Government to continue its financial backing of national car production, which has far-reaching implications for both the manufacturing and van insurance sectors.

"We are investing in the brand in the UK and I would urge the Government to maintain its support in the long term," he said.

Strong sales of Astra Van insurance in recent years demonstrate the model's continuing appeal with British drivers, and expectations for its successor will be high whether built at home or abroad.
