All van insurance for young drivers will be telematics-based within a decade, according to the chief executive of one motor insurance company.
Although telematics van insurance for young drivers is currently available from some providers, it is currently the exception rather than the rule.
The fact that some people feel uneasy about having a box in their car that allows their driving to be monitored is just one of many reasons why the technology is yet to be embraced by all providers.
However, the chief executive believes that it is only a matter of time before people have to drop their qualms. "Most insurers that we speak to think in the next five to 10 years it will be impossible to get insurance without having some sort of telematics device," he said.
"If you think about it, why would you run an insurance company and say: 'I am prepared to price my risk on the basis of postcode and age' when you can see exactly how someone drives?"
Others though, are not convinced that the future of van insurance for drivers is all telematics – even those who provide the little "black boxes".
For a large proportion of the market, such as low risk, low premium, it is doubtful whether a telematics solution would meet both criteria, and hence there will always be a large non-telematics market," said one provider.
The debate may continue, but for now younger drivers are able to compare van insurance quotes from a variety of different providers.
